Excerpts from Recent Lectures and Guidance
April 6, 2014: The 70th Missionary Members Cultivation Series Seminar
Let me begin by clarifying what the basics are for carrying on a dialogue. It is actually something that you have been practicing in your daily life. First of all, it begins with listening carefully to the other person with the attitude of “hearing, listening to, and asking.” This is the entrance into any kind of conversation. Therefore, this will be our principle for carrying on a dialogue with others.
Today, what I would like to talk about are the steps that come after our “hearing, listening to, and asking.” The wisdom that I wish for you to learn today is what it means for us to really elevate that power of wisdom as a companion of life or a mentor.
It is shown here as “I / We / You.” This figure (marked “I”) represents you yourself, or you as a companion or a mentor. The second step “We” refers to your relationship with the other person, or En-yu (a friend with whom you have bonds), namely, what you share in common with the other person. The third step represents the other person, referred to as “You,” being prompted to get up on his/her own two feet. “I / We / You” is the three steps of focus of topics that you as a companion or a mentor go through in your dialogue.
From here on, I would like to take up the “plateaus in life” to explain the three steps of “I / We / You.”
