Satsuki (May) – the Month to Focus on Work

May is traditionally called satsuki in Japan. It was originally called sanaetsuki, (month of rice seedlings), meaning "time to plant rice" which then became shortened to satsuki. It is said that the Chinese characters for it are taken from the homophone satsuki (azalea), which blooms in May of the lunar calendar.

The method of planting rice in water-filled field is believed to have been carried out already from the late Jomon period (about 3,000 years ago) to the early Kofun period (about 1700 years ago), and it was an important practice given that society was primarily agriculturally based.

farming, and it was hard work concentrated during the rainy season. Therefore, the manpower of only a single family was not enough, and the people would exchange labor force and help each other. The cooperation of other villagers was necessary and tied people together.

Thus, the month of May by its name represents the time of intensive labor of rice planting.

Moreover, it is said that May is the most comfortable season of the year in terms of weather, as well as the most suitable time for activities. If that is so, we shall use this time to tackle our given work intensively.

Stability is the Base for a New Challenge

It has been a month since the new fiscal year started from April in Japan. I assume you are getting used to the rhythm of your daily life by now.

You may have some room to look around and consider events in either the immediate or long-term future.

If you are given such “stability” for the time being, I would like you to perceive that as the base for a new challenge.

Of course such “stability” is a “result” that has been brought about by your own efforts and from people around you. However, this “result” is not a final conclusion and things do not end there

The flow of time in which we live brings a new Chaos from the future continuously and incessantly. A crystalized result becomes a new condition in the next moment, and calls upon us to face the next Chaos.

Therefore the present is the base and runway for the next challenge.

It is the time to shift up a gear, and make a strong step forward.

Fill your inside with energy.

What is the challenge you have to take on from now? What is your theme (purpose) for today and tomorrow?

In which aspect do you have to raise your level? In which part do you have to store your power?

What do you need to seek and focus upon now?

If you find with certainty what you have to work on, accelerate your steps.

To Accelerate in Order to Induce a New Chemical Reaction

When a reality that is beyond our expectation is produced, we sometimes use an expression; “A chemistry was at work.”

Chemistry studies phenomena in which combining various substances produces a completely different substance from the original one. A chemical reaction is a phenomena in which 1 plus 1 does not remain 2, but seems to multiply to 3 or 4.

When such chemical reactions occur, there is a certain law. It is that many reactions are more likely to take place

at a higher temperature or pressure. In other words, the greater the energy input, the more likelihood for the reaction to take place. This is not something unexpected. Perhaps many people know it in their heart.

Because of that, this month, in the air of May with fresh breezes, please try to store energy more than ever and discharge it toward your assured aspiration and goal. Please try to accelerate yourself with your own will and devote your utmost energy to inducing a new chemical reaction.
