It fills me with so much happiness to be able to see each of your faces here in Tohoku today. It is such a blessing that each of you are well and have been able to endure this past year and several months. Those are my only sentiments.
However, there is something we must not forget. That is the great number of people who lost their lives in that earthquake disaster. Nearly 20,000 people’s lives were taken in an instant. People have asked me, “Why is it that, instead of mine, their lives had to be taken?” I believe it is the mission of us who were left behind, to bring this Japan back to life.” May we be able to carry “troubled situations,” not just the greater issues but also what we can do at hand, to the dimension of “wishes.”

It is my belief that all the people who departed ahead of us, had faith in and entrusted to us what they left behind, as if to say; “We are leaving it all to you. Please don’t forget that we were here, and that we were alive.” How can we ever forget them, everyone? Indeed, let us open up the path more and more each day.
